The thin sheet material to be tested, typically plastic or metal film or sheeting up to 0.040" thick, is held by line contact at each end between the flat backing plates and the eccentric cylinders. The cylinders are spring-loaded and with a toggle arm to ease installation of the specimen. The eccentric cam action of the cylinders makes them self-tightening when a tensile force is applied to the fixture through the threaded end fittings.
The faces of the cylinders and backing plates normally are supplied with a tungsten carbide particle coating. However, alternate gripping surfaces can be provided, including smooth surfaces.
The standard grips shown in Figs. 1 and 2 accommodate a specimen up to 1" wide, in accordance with ASTM Standard D882 (Reference 1). A 1/2"-13 threaded attachment hole in the end of each grip is provided.
Alternate grip configurations and specimen size capacities can be supplied upon request. For example, 5" wide grips, with special adapters, are shown in Fig. 3.
