Dimension stone used in the construction industry requires durability testing. ASTM C170 describes test methods for determining the difference in compressive strength between
various dimensional stones, including granite, limestone, marble, and sandstone.
ASTM C170 requirements for determining the compressive strength of dimension stone include the following machine specifications and sample preparation:
Apparatus - Any machine that meets the ASTM E4 specification for grip/specimen centering capability, with a loading rate not exceeding 100 PSI/second
Test specimens - Cubes or cylinders not less than 2 inches in diameter or lateral dimension
Measured specimens - A minimum of five specimens are tested for each test condition (dry or wet)
Conditions - Dimension stone specimens may be tested in both dry and wet conditions
Dry specimens - 48 hours at 140 ± 4º Fahrenheit
Wet specimens immersed in water at 72 ± 4º Fahrenheit for 48 hours
To test compressive strength, we selected an Industrial Series 600DX Hydraulic Universal Testing Machine with compression capability only. The machine includes an adjustable
crossbar with mounting features to accept and center the upper spherical seat compression plate fixture. In addition, the machine includes a work table to facilitate centering of the
lower flat compression plate fixture.
